Lip care
Lip butter, balm, oil or mask: which one do you actually need?
By the LÉRA team · · 2 min read

The short answer
A lip balm is a firm, protective day layer. A lip oil adds shine but doesn't stay long. A lip butter sits between balm and gloss, conditioning with a glossy finish. A lip sleeping mask is the richest, made to stay on overnight. Most people only need two: something for the day and something for the night.
| Texture | Finish | Best for | When | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lip balm | Firm, waxy | Matte to satin | Basic protection | Day |
| Lip oil | Liquid | High shine | Shine over colour | Day |
| Lip butter | Soft, cushiony | Glossy, often tinted | Comfort and gloss in one | Any time |
| Lip sleeping mask | Rich, thick | A shiny coat | Dry or flaky lips | Night |
Lip balm
The classic stick. Mostly waxes and oils, firm enough to hold its shape in a tube, and good at one job: a protective layer against wind and cold. Most give little shine or colour.
Lip oil
Mostly oils, so it slides on with lots of shine but little staying power. Lovely over colour; less help on its own when lips are genuinely dry, because oil alone doesn't stay put for long.
Lip butter
Richer than an oil, softer than a balm. A good lip butter conditions while you wear it and leaves a glossy finish without the tackiness of a classic gloss, often with a sheer tint. Our Peptide Lip Butter is in this family, with shea butter, argan and camellia oils and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1.
Lip sleeping mask
The richest of the four, made for the hours you're not eating or talking. It sits on your lips overnight and slows the water they lose while you sleep. More in what a lip sleeping mask actually does.
So which do you need?
For most people, two:
- A day product you'll actually reapply. A lip butter if you like a little gloss and colour; a balm if you'd rather nothing showed.
- A night product that does the heavy lifting: a lip sleeping mask.
If you'd like both, a Build Your Kit of three or more products takes at least 10% off the lot.
