What a lip sleeping mask actually does (and how to use one)

The short answer
A lip sleeping mask is a thick balm, rich in oils, butters and waxes, that you put on before bed. It stays on your lips for hours, slowing the water they lose overnight and softening dry flakes, so they feel smoother in the morning. Apply a generous layer as the last step of your night routine and wipe away what's left when you wake up.
Why lips dry out faster than the rest of your face
The skin on your lips isn't like the skin around them. Its outer layer is much thinner, and it has no oil glands of its own. So lips can't top up their own moisture the way your cheeks can, and they lose water to the air faster. That's why they're often the first thing to feel tight in dry weather, and why licking them makes it worse: saliva evaporates in seconds and takes some of the lip's own water with it.
What a lip sleeping mask is
A lip sleeping mask is a balm built for the hours you're not using your mouth. Eating, drinking, talking and wiping your lips all wear daytime products away. At night a balm can stay put, so a sleeping mask is made richer than a day balm, usually with:
- Occlusives, like waxes, which sit on top and slow water loss.
- Emollients, like plant oils and butters, which soften rough, flaky patches.
- Barrier lipids, like ceramides, the same family of fats your skin's own barrier is made from.
The "mask" part is a name more than a method. There's nothing to peel or rinse; you just leave it on.
How to use a lip sleeping mask
- Finish the rest of your night routine first, so the mask isn't rubbed off by a towel or other products.
- Apply a generous layer with the applicator or a clean fingertip. Thicker than you'd wear in the day: it should look like a coat, not a gloss.
- Leave it on overnight.
- In the morning, wipe away what's left with a tissue or a warm cloth. Loose flakes usually come away with it, so there's no need to scrub.
Consistency is what makes the difference. One night helps; a week of nights is when lips stop feeling tight by mid-afternoon.
What's in ours
The LÉRA Lip Sleeping Mask is built on olive fruit oil, shea butter, jojoba seed oil and meadowfoam seed oil, held in candelilla wax, with Ceramide AP and vitamin E. It comes in two scents, Vanilla and Rose, with the same formula underneath. Both are vegan and cruelty-free, in a 25 g jar.
Sleeping mask, balm or butter?
A day balm is thinner so it doesn't feel heavy while you talk. A peptide lip butter adds gloss and a sheer tint for the day. A sleeping mask is the richest of the three and is made to be left alone for hours. Plenty of people use a butter by day and a mask by night; there's a fuller comparison in Lip butter, balm, oil or mask.
